Reliable power is a daily decision for Nigerian businesses, and the controls inside a generator or a microgrid decide how well that decision pays off. On 3rd November 2026, ISIL and ComAp brought that conversation to the Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos, for the ISIL x ComAp Academy, a masterclass on Power Generation and Hybrid Microgrids. Attendees spent the day with ComAp's team led by Erick Ongera, with partner companies such as TOFA Ltd, and with ISIL's leadership.

ISIL had announced the masterclass as a free event with limited seats, built around power generation, PLC systems, synchronisation and hybrid microgrid control. Here is how the day ran.

What the Masterclass Covered

The day followed the ComAp Academy format. Erick Ongera, ComAp's event lead, who is from Kenya and moderated the day, walked attendees through the schedule at about 9:30am, and breakfast followed. The programme started officially at 10:00am with introductions and presentations from the ComAp team, then from ComAp's partner companies, including TOFA Ltd.

Erick Ongera took attendees through ComAp's smart control solutions for power generation, hybrid microgrid (HMG) control with its market trends and technical and commercial insights, and HMG site experiences and control philosophies.

Why Hybrid Microgrid Control Was the Focus

ComAp's own explanation helps frame the day. A microgrid, in the definition ComAp adopts, is a local power system of connected loads and energy sources that acts as a single controllable entity. A hybrid microgrid mixes sources such as diesel or gas generators, solar and batteries under an energy management system.

Erick Ongera's message was how ComAp technology can optimise renewable energy sources, lower generation costs and improve power stability while preventing unauthorised feeding into the grid. He showed attendees how a company can monitor several sites from one location, make better use of solar energy by extending the life of its battery energy storage systems (BESS), and reduce its use of fossil fuels without compromising stability or power quality. ComAp's hybrid power generation page puts fuel savings for solar-diesel setups at roughly 20 to 60 percent, which is why the topic matters to anyone running generators.

Hands-On With ComAp Controllers

The masterclass was not slides alone. Attendees gathered around ComAp controllers to inspect the hardware and follow the demonstrations, with the InteliGen 1000 generator controller shown on the projector.

ISIL on the Programme

After lunch, from 2:00pm, the presentations continued and ISIL took the floor. Engr. Abimbola F., ISIL's General Manager, presented under the title "ComAp: Building Intelligent Power Solutions in Nigeria". Her slide described ComAp's technology as supporting the control, protection, synchronisation and monitoring of power generation systems, and pointed to the opportunity in Nigeria to build on that foundation and extend advanced control solutions across commercial, industrial and critical power applications.

Partners in the Room

TOFA Ltd, a Lagos power solutions and electrical engineering firm, was among ComAp's partner companies on the programme. Its team at the masterclass included Matilda Obuh, Mher Bakalian and Dany Wehbeh, who joined Erick Ongera of ComAp and the ISIL team at the masterclass.

Networking Beyond the Sessions

Breakfast, lunch and the breaks between sessions gave attendees time to speak with the ISIL, ComAp and TOFA teams directly, which is often where projects begin.

What Attendees Took Away

One attendee, Engr. Muhammad Kola Yahaya, a technical inspecting engineer, wrote on LinkedIn that the event broadened his understanding of ComAp technologies for generator protection, multi-source power synchronisation, energy management and generator fuel efficiency. He singled out ComAp's InteliConfig software, noting that it is free and needs no internet connection, and said he looks forward to meeting ComAp devices on his future inspections of generating sets.
