You post every day, your views are climbing and a friend abroad says the app is paying them. So you open your settings and find nothing. This is the most common surprise for African creators, and it is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. Platform payments are decided country by country, and most of the big programmes were built around a short list of markets. Here is where Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya stand, platform by platform.
The Short Answer by Country
Nigeria
TikTok's Creator Rewards programme is not available in Nigeria, but LIVE gifts are. Facebook and Instagram monetisation opened on 27th June 2024. On X, Nigeria is on the supported list for the Original Content Rewards Program.
South Africa
TikTok's Creator Rewards programme is not available in South Africa, and TikTok has no immediate plans to launch it, but LIVE gifts are available. For Facebook, Instagram and X, check your professional dashboard and X's eligible country list before planning around them.
Kenya
Kenya is not among the countries in Creator Rewards' list, but LIVE gifts are available. Meta said Kenyan creators would start earning on Facebook and Instagram from June 2024 if they met its criteria. For X, check the eligible country list before subscribing.
Programmes change often, so treat any breakdown, including this one, as a starting point and confirm inside your own account before you plan around it.
TikTok: LIVE Gifts, Not the Creator Fund
The headline TikTok programme, Creator Rewards, pays for qualifying videos, but it is limited to a handful of countries that include the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil. None of the three countries in this guide is on that list. In South Africa, TikTok has said there are no immediate plans to bring the fund to local shores.
What does operate is the set of tools that pay you directly from your audience. LIVE gifts let viewers send virtual gifts during a broadcast that you can exchange for money. TikTok also lists video gifts, paid subscriptions and a programme where creators promote artistes' songs, with the pay depending on how the videos perform. South African creators can also earn through Effect Creator Rewards, a programme available in South Africa, Morocco and Egypt for people who build effects.
In Kenya, these same tools appear in the Creator Monetisation Centre inside TikTok Studio. If you cannot see an option, your account may not yet meet its requirements.
Instagram and Facebook: Meta Opened the Door in 2024
For years, creators in Nigeria and Ghana were shut out of Meta's payment tools. That changed when Meta opened monetisation to Nigerian and Ghanaian creators on 27th June 2024. The tools listed on Facebook include in-stream ads, live ads, ads on Reels, bonuses and subscriptions, with earnings depending on advertisers and views.
For Kenya, Meta said creators would begin earning from Facebook and Instagram from June 2024 if they met its eligibility criteria. The practical step for any country is the same: open your professional dashboard and look for the monetisation section. If a tool is missing, the account or the country has not been approved for it.
X: A New Programme With Tougher Rules
X has changed the rules this year. The old Creator Revenue Sharing programme ended on 7th September 2026 and was replaced by the Original Content Rewards Program, which focuses on original work. To apply, you need to be 18 or older, based in an eligible country, hold an active Premium subscription, have at least 500 verified followers and have at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the previous 90 days. Nigeria is on X's supported list.
Payments are made every two weeks with a $30 minimum, through a Stripe payout account, or X Money where it is available, and creators are responsible for any taxes. For Kenya and South Africa, check X's current eligible country list before you pay for a subscription.
What to Do Where a Programme Does Not Operate
Not qualifying is common, and it is not the end of the road. Creators who cannot get a platform payout usually build income from audience-funded sources instead: gifts, subscriptions, brand partnerships, digital products and tickets. PINCHED's guide to how African creators mix their income shows how these fit together, and its look at how long content creation takes to pay in Nigeria is a realistic timeline.
If you want your own audience to pay you directly, PINCHED lets fans give a pinch to support African creators, and creators on Pro can put their own price on a piece from ₦200. Neither depends on a platform deciding that your country qualifies.
