Quick Note Before You Go
Not every attraction publishes current opening details. Therefore, we have marked each place below as confirmed or confirm before you go. Also, Obudu Mountain Resort is not on this list because the state planned to close it temporarily from 1 September 2026 for rehabilitation, with no reopening date given.
1. Carnival Calabar: The Street Party Itself (Confirmed)
This is the main reason to come. The 2026 theme is “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny,” and the Cross River State Carnival Commission lists these key dates:
26 December: Cultural Carnival and Night of Kings and Queens
27 December: Junior Carnival
28 December: Parade of the Bands, the flagship event
29 December: Bikers Carnival
30 December: Street Party and Colour Runs
Calas Vegas, Bayside, Diamond and Freedom are among the bands, and Calas Vegas has won the overall title three years running. Street viewing is free, while grandstand seats and VIP areas are sold separately. Arrive early, because the best roadside spots fill hours before the parade.
The scale is huge. December 2025 drew more than one million street participants, about 12,000 airport arrivals in a single month and around 20,000 traders, mostly at the Christmas Village. You can see the official calendar for dry runs and other events.
2. Millennium Park: The Festive Heart of the City (Confirm Before You Go)
Millennium Park is where the festive season officially started last year. Governor Bassey Otu lit the Christmas tree there on 30 November 2025 to open the 20th edition of the carnival.
We could not find a 2026 programme for the park yet. However, given its role last year, it is worth checking the Cross River tourism channels for this year’s lighting date and events.
3. Marina Resort and the Slave History Museum (Confirm Before You Go)
Marina Resort sits on the Calabar waterfront. In June 2026, the state announced a revival worth more than N5 billion that describes a 24-hour music venue, club, bistro, cinema, swimming pools and accommodation. The report presents these as features of the project and does not say which are open yet.
Inside the resort is the Slave History Museum, built in a former barracoon and opened on 17 March 2011. It tells the story of the slave trade through exhibits such as chains and shackles and a life-size slave-ship display. It is serious and moving, so give it time.
4. Drill Ranch: Meet Africa’s Rarest Monkeys (Confirm Before You Go)
Calabar is home to the headquarters of the Pandrillus drill project. According to a travel listing, the Calabar site is free to enter and open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with donations encouraged. It is in Nsefik Eyo Layout, off Atekong Road.
However, the listing gives no phone number and no 2026 update, so confirm before you go. Also note that the Calabar site is the project’s base and chimpanzee nursery, while most drill groups and the guest cabins are at Afi Mountain, several hours away.
5. The Calabar Museum (Old Residency): History in a Colonial Building (Confirm Before You Go)
Built in 1884, the Old Residency was declared a national monument in 1959 and holds what is described as the largest collection of documents and artefacts on Calabar, the Cross River region and slavery. It is run by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
Be aware that reports say it has struggled with maintenance and funding, and no opening hours are published. Therefore, call or ask your hotel first. If it is closed, the Slave History Museum is a good alternative.
Why Calabar Feels Different
Unlike a single event, Calabar turns the whole month into a festival. The 2025 edition ran as a 31-day commercial and cultural hub, and the dancing tradition that grew around the White Market Roundabout is said to be about 21 years old. As a result, even a short visit lets you see more than the parade, from food stalls to street performances.
What We Left Out
Obudu Mountain Resort: planned closure for rehabilitation from 1 September 2026.
Tinapa: Cross River took the resort back from AMCON in late 2025, but we found no confirmed account of what is open now.
Kwa Falls: the latest report found is from 2022 and mentions neglected steps, so we could not confirm current conditions.
Planning Tips for Detty December in Calabar
Fly in. Margaret Ekpo International Airport is about an hour from Lagos, while the road takes 10 hours or more.
Book early. Hotels are limited, the best often sell out by November, and parade-week rates can roughly double.
Go early on 28 December. The parade is the busiest day.
Keep it affordable. Our Detty December hub has more guides for first-timers and budgets.
