Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured their place in football history after defeating Japan 2–1 in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, becoming world champions for the first time.

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have been crowned world champions after defeating Japan 2–1 in a thrilling final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco on Saturday, November 7.

The victory marks Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title, bringing an end to the team’s long pursuit of the trophy and delivering another landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football.

Having reached the final after an impressive 3–1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals, the Flamingos carried their momentum into the decisive encounter against a technically gifted Japanese side.

Bashiru and Umejiaku deliver the decisive blows

Nigeria made their intentions clear early in the contest, creating opportunities and putting Japan’s defence under pressure.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute when Awawu Bashiru found the back of the net to give Nigeria a deserved first-half advantage.

The Flamingos returned from the interval with the same attacking intent and doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half. Oluebube Umejiaku scored in the 47th minute, putting Nigeria in a commanding position at 2–0.

Japan, however, were not prepared to surrender their hopes of lifting the trophy. Fuki Ito pulled one back in the 80th minute, setting up a tense closing period.

With the Japanese side pushing for an equaliser, Nigeria had to withstand considerable late pressure. The Flamingos remained disciplined at the back, protected their advantage and held on until the final whistle confirmed their historic triumph.

Nigeria’s road to the trophy

The championship victory represents the culmination of an impressive knockout campaign for the Nigerian side.

The Flamingos defeated Mexico 2–1 in the Round of 16 before overcoming Venezuela 1–0 in the quarter-finals.

They then produced one of their strongest performances of the tournament, beating Brazil 3–1 in the semi-finals to secure their first appearance in the competition’s final.

Their victory over Japan has now taken that journey one step further, turning a historic final appearance into a maiden world title.

North Korea claim third place

Elsewhere, North Korea secured third place at the tournament after delivering a dominant 6–0 victory over Brazil in the third-place playoff.

The result completed the tournament’s final standings, with Nigeria taking gold, Japan finishing as runners-up and North Korea claiming bronze.

A landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football

Nigeria’s triumph is more than a trophy for the national U-17 team. It is a significant achievement for the country’s women’s football development and a moment of recognition for the young players representing the next generation of Nigerian football.

The Flamingos have previously demonstrated their ability to compete against the world’s best at this level. This time, they have gone all the way.

From Bashiru’s opening goal to Umejiaku’s decisive second, the Nigerian team delivered when it mattered most.

The Flamingos are no longer chasing history. They have made it.
