The event is the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 and it opened on Saturday, 31 October, and the IOC calls it the first Olympic sporting event on African soil.
So, here is what happened on opening night, what the Games cover and where Nigeria fits in.

Is Dakar 2026 Really the First Olympic Event in Africa?
Yes. In short, Dakar 2026 is the first IOC event ever held on the continent, and it is widely billed as Africa’s first Olympic event. However, the Youth Olympic Games are a separate event for athletes aged 15 to 18, first held in Singapore in 2010. The Summer Olympics themselves have still never been staged in Africa.
The road here was long. Dakar was chosen as host in 2018 for 2022 Games, and the dates moved to 2026 after the COVID-19 delay to the Tokyo Olympics.
What Happened at the Opening Ceremony
The ceremony took place at the 50,000-capacity Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, about 30 km from Dakar. About 1,100 performers took part, including around 700 dancers, in a show that celebrated African culture and creativity.
The show was titled “The Flight of Sitoé” and followed three characters representing Africa’s past, present and future. Baaba Maal performed, Kya Loum sang the national anthem, and around 100 wrestlers performed the bakk ritual dance.
The parade followed tradition, with Greece first, the Refugee Olympic Team next and host Senegal last. Meanwhile, IOC president Kirsty Coventry told the crowd, “I am proud to be an African woman.”
The flame also made a long journey first. It was lit in Athens on 10 September and then toured all 14 regions of Senegal under the tagline “Pass the Energy.”

Mark your calendar for the key dates. Table tennis and beach volleyball began on 31 October, swimming starts on 1 November, boxing runs from 7 to 12 November, and athletics and road cycling take place around 8 to 10 November.
Why This Moment Matters
Behind the scenes, the Games also need people power. Organisers are looking for more than 6,000 volunteers under the Jambaar26 programme, and the Games bring the first Refugee Olympic Team to a Youth Olympic Games, made up of athletes based in Africa. That gives the event a wider story than medals alone.
Beyond the medals, this is a statement about where major sport can happen. The official motto, “Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates,” says it plainly, and for many young African athletes, the Games are now on their own continent instead of an ocean away.
Also, the first medals are being awarded on Sunday, 1 November, starting with swimming and judo, so the action is only just beginning. Keep an eye on PINCHED for updates on Nigerian athletes as the Games continue.
Dakar 2026 will run for two weeks, so there is plenty of time to follow your favourite sports and see how Nigeria’s young athletes get on. Which Nigerian athlete will you be cheering for? Visit the PINCHED homepage for more stories, and tell us who you are watching.
