Every year, the same thing happens. Your timeline fills with beach clubs, concert videos and ₦700,000-a-night apartments, and you start wondering whether Detty December is only for the rich. However, it does not have to be. With early planning and a few smart choices, you can enjoy the season for far less.
So, here is how to do Detty December on a budget in 2026. This is part of our Detty December series, after our guides for first-timers and locals.
How Much Does Detty December Really Cost?
Costs vary wildly, but there is a useful benchmark. In July 2026, a mid-tier 10-day stay costs about ₦1,020,000 to ₦1,750,000, excluding flights. A scrappy, local-style December runs about ₦700,000 to ₦1,200,000.
Importantly, the high-flyer tier runs from ₦4.7 million to over ₦12 million. So, the gap between a budget trip and a luxury one is enormous, and most of it comes from just three choices: where you sleep, how you move and what you book.
1. Book Your Stay Early, and Split It
Accommodation is usually the biggest cost. Normal short-let rates range from ₦120,000 to ₦250,000 a night for a two-bedroom in Lekki Phase 1 or Oniru, and says peak December rates can double or triple. Meanwhile, Nigeria Housing Market reported that some Lekki Phase 1 one-bedrooms hit ₦700,000 a night last December.
Smart ways to cut the bill
Split a bigger place. Tribune’s example is a three-bedroom at ₦250,000 a night, which works out to roughly ₦83,000 per person when three people share it. Another example splits ₦300,000 a night six ways, or ₦50,000 each.
Stay outside the hotspots. Last December’s one-bed rates at ₦120,000 to ₦200,000 in Lekki Phase 2 and Ajah, against up to ₦700,000 in Phase 1. Mainland areas such as Yaba, Surulere and Ikeja ran ₦150,000 to ₦250,000.
Consider a hotel. Mushrooms says hotel prices rose less sharply than short-lets in 2025, which may suit solo travellers or couples on short stays.
Book now. Both guides say to book in October or early November, before December premiums apply.
However, treat the Mushrooms numbers carefully. Its figures describe 2025, not this year, and the site sells the splitting service it recommends. Also, avoid paying a landlord or agent in full upfront, and use only verified hosts.
2. Fly Before the Rush
If you are flying within Nigeria, dates matter more than airlines. Flightpadi data on October 11, 2026, shows that a fare near ₦120,000 in a normal week can exceed ₦300,000 in the festive rush.
Lagos to Enugu: ₦104,000 on December 11, against ₦327,500 from December 17.
Lagos to Abuja: ₦135,000 on December 17, against ₦284,500 on nearby dates.
Enugu to Lagos: ₦121,000 on December 22.
Fares were noticeably lower before December 14, and that two airlines on one route differed by ₦66,500. So, compare airlines, check the days around your date, and confirm the price before paying, because these are snapshots.
3. Plan Your Rides Carefully
Transport is trickier this year. Lagos e-hailing drivers began an indefinite strike against Bolt and inDrive on October 12. However, reports since then differ. It's been reported that the union called off the action after about four days, but the dispute over commissions is unresolved. It also says the union urged members to uninstall inDrive.
So, check the latest before you travel, and keep a backup. Here are some ways to protect your wallet:
Tribune says rideshare fares surge between 1:00 and 5:00 AM, so leave events early or share rides.
For groups, a daily-rate driver can be cheaper than repeated rides, according to Tribune.
Carry some cash, because boat rides and small vendors rarely take cards. Our ATM report explains why withdrawing early helps.
4. Pick Your Concerts Wisely
Tickets are where budgets often break. Early-bird passes cost ₦15,000 to ₦35,000, while late or on-site tickets run ₦50,000 to ₦100,000. So, buying early can save you more than half.
What we know about 2026 events
Detty December Fest (Dec 18 to 30): Wizkid opens on December 18. General access costs ₦50,000, Golden Circle ₦150,000 and VIP standing ₦300,000, with VAT added at checkout. Day and weekend pass prices were not published.
Davido’s Oriadé: The Residency (Dec 17 to 19): It is at the National Theatre on October 16 that fewer than 350 tickets remained. It gave no prices.
Flytime Fest (Dec 22 to 24) and Rhythm Unplugged (Dec 21): Both are at the Eko Convention Centre. No ticket prices had been published when I checked.
So, set a ticket limit now. For example, choose one headline show and fill the rest of your trip with cheaper plans. Also, confirm table minimum spends before going out, because Tribune says they can double a night’s budget.
5. Fill the Days With Cheap Fun
Not everything needs a wristband Victoria Island and Lekki turn into a street-level party, with day parties and rooftop sets that need no ticket.
Beach day: Tarkwa Bay boat rides cost about ₦1,500 to ₦3,000 per person, plus roughly ₦500 entry. Travel by day and carry cash.
Nature: Walk the canopy at the Lekki Conservation Centre. Fees were not listed, so call ahead.
Free events: Eko Fiesta was free with registration last December.
Out of town: The Calabar Carnival parades run December 26 to 30, according to The Rio Times.
A Sample Budget for 5 Nights
Here is a simple illustration using the figures above. It is my own arithmetic, not a quote, and it leaves out food, rides and VAT.
Stay: five nights at ₦50,000 each in a split short-let, about ₦250,000.
One concert: Wizkid general access at ₦50,000.
Beach day: about ₦2,000 to ₦3,500.
That comes to roughly ₦302,000 to ₦303,500 before food and transport. Importantly, it is a rough guide. Your real number depends on the date, the area and who you travel with.
Protect Your Money
Set daily card limits and turn off extra auto-debits, as Tribune suggests.
Put aside January rent, utilities and food money before you spend, also per Tribune.
Buy a local SIM and use registered ride-hailing after events, according to The Rio Times.
A cheaper Detty December is about timing, not sacrifice. Book early, share costs, choose one big show and enjoy the free stuff. For more, explore our music desk and Ember to Remember explainer.
