Maybe your friends keep posting videos. Or your cousin has already booked a flight home. Either way, you have heard the words Detty December a hundred times, and you still do not know where to start. Do not worry, because this guide walks you through it, one step at a time.

By the end, you will know what Detty December is, which events and cities to look at, how to handle money, entry rules and transport, and how to avoid the mistakes first-timers make. Ready? Let’s go.

What Exactly Is Detty December?

Detty December is Nigeria’s festive season, when people at home and in the diaspora return for concerts, parties, weddings and family time. The word “detty” comes from Pidgin “dirty” and suggests celebrating without restraint. Its origin is unclear, although some link it to the Calabar Carnival, and recent returnees are nicknamed IJGBs, short for “I Just Got Back”.

The season usually stretches from early December into January, so you do not have to be there for the whole thing. However, the busiest stretch tends to be the days around Christmas and New Year, and that is when prices climb the most.

Step 1: Know the Big Events of 2026

Before you choose a city, look at what is actually happening. Here are the events with confirmed dates so far.

  • Davido, “Oriadé: The Residency”: National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, December 17 to 19

  • Detty December Fest: December 18 to 30, with Wizkid headlining opening night on December 18

  • Flytime Fest: Eko Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, from December 22, with headliners still to be announced

  • Calabar Carnival: Calabar, Cross River State, with main parades from December 26 to 30

Be careful with the details. Some reports that Flytime ends on December 24, while others lists December 25, so check the official ticket page before you book.

Step 2: Choose Your City

Many first-timers think Detty December means Lagos only. In fact, the season spreads across the country, and a Peoples Gazette list of top destinations shows how different each place feels. Note that it was published last year, so events may change.

Lagos: The Main Stage

Lagos is where most big concerts, beach parties and nightlife happen, so it is the easiest choice if you want everything in one place. It is also the busiest and most expensive, so expect traffic and high prices.

Abuja: Polished and Calmer

Abuja offers rooftop parties in Wuse 2 and Maitama, plus places like Jabi Lake Park. It also hosted a 16-day “Groovy December” festival in 2025. At the moment, there's no confirmed 2026 edition yet.

Calabar: The Carnival City

Calabar is the original December party for many people. The flagship Parade of the Bands takes place on December 28, and watching from the street is free. Fly in from Lagos or Abuja, since the road trip from Lagos can take ten hours or more, and book early because parade-week hotels can roughly double in price.

Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu and Beyond

If you want something different, the Gazette also highlights Port Harcourt’s clubs and street shows, Ibadan’s affordable street food and nightlife, Enugu’s nature spots such as Awhum Waterfall, Asaba and Warri’s parties, and Jos for cooler weather and hiking. So, if big crowds are not your thing, one of these may suit you better.

Step 3: Sort Out Entry Rules

If you are flying in from abroad, check your visa early. Nigeria offers visa-on-arrival for many nationalities but requires online pre-approval, and proof of yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Rules change, so confirm with Nigeria’s official immigration channels before you pay for anything.

Step 4: Book Flights and Stays Early

This is the step people delay, and it costs them. You should know that hotels and short-lets in Victoria Island and Lekki sell out by October, and airfares rise sharply from November. So, book as soon as you know your dates.

Also, be careful with short-let bookings.  Always double-check listings, ask a friend to visit the property, request video footage and read reviews, because shady operators target this season.

Step 5: Plan Your Money

The Rio Times estimates about US$2,000 to US$3,000 for a week for independent travellers, but that covers Lagos and Accra generally, so treat it as a rough guide. Cards and mobile money are widely used, but carry some naira in cash for beach vendors and transport. In addition, banking delays are common during the rush, so have a backup way to pay.

Be honest with yourself about prices, too. Femi Fadina, president of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, said in December 2025 that some hotels, short-lets and organisers were charging very high prices. So, set a total budget early and keep a reserve.

Step 6: Get Around and Stay Safe

Traffic is part of the experience. We recommend renting a car for a set period, hiring a private driver or going out with friends who drive, and having a plan to leave a party at short notice. You should also use registered ride-hailing after events, keep your phone out of sight in dense crowds and agree on meeting points in advance, since networks can jam around big shows.

Moreover, buy a local SIM at the airport, because mobile data is described as cheap. Then share your location with someone you trust.

Step 7: Plan Your Nights, Not Just Your Days

Do not try to do everything. You can do two or three events a night at most, with breaks so you do not burn out. Pack a power bank, a portable fan, comfortable shoes and water. For a calmer break, try a day trip to Ibadan or a private beach.

Your first Detty December does not have to be confusing. Pick your city, lock in your stay, protect your budget and leave room to rest. For more music and travel stories, visit our music desk and adventure desk.
