Five cities, one big theme and more than two months of art. That is how the East Africa Art Biennale 2026 was announced. The 11th edition is billed to run from September 15 to November 20, 2026, in Nairobi, under the theme “Common Grounds, New Horizons”. However, one detail makes this story more complicated than a normal event guide.
So, before you plan a trip, let’s separate what organisers have announced from what has been publicly disputed.
East Africa Art Biennale 2026: What Has Been Announced
Edition: The 11th East Africa Art Biennale (EASTAFAB)
Dates: September 15 to November 20, 2026
Main city: Nairobi, Kenya
Satellite cities: Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura
Full theme: “Common Grounds, New Horizons: Reimagining East African Futures”
According to Africans Column, artists are expected to explore urban growth and social change, environmental resilience and cultural memory. Africa Art News gives the same dates and theme.
What the Theme Means
“Common Grounds, New Horizons” points to the shared realities that link East African countries, such as fast-growing cities, changing climates and long-held memories. The subtitle, “Reimagining East African Futures”, suggests the art will look forward as well as back.
In practice, you can expect painting, sculpture and installations, along with talks and workshops. Africans Column also mentions curator training, artist residencies and community workshops, so the biennale is meant to build skills as well as put works on walls.
The Venues Listed in Nairobi
Those reports name the Nairobi National Museum as the main hub. They also list the GoDown Arts Centre, Nairobi Gallery, the Railway Museum, Kuona Trust and Circle Art Gallery as partner spaces, plus some outdoor installations around the city.
Here is the catch. These venue lists have not been independently confirmed, and the 2026 artist list has not been published in the reports found. So, treat the venues as announced, not verified

The Museum Dispute You Should Know About
In February 2026, the National Museums of Kenya publicly distanced itself from the event. The museum said its name and images were used in promotional material without its knowledge or consent. It added that it is not involved in the biennale “in any capacity”.
However, the museum did not call the event fake. Its statement only said it was not associated or affiliated with it. That difference matters, so we should not claim more than the museum said.
The Biennial Foundation page on the biennale gives no 2026 details, and the Nairobi National Museum’s own page does not mention a biennale. So, if you want to see art at the museum, contact them directly before you travel.
Who Runs the Biennale?
The East Africa Art Biennale Association has been registered with Tanzania’s National Council of Arts since January 2003, according to the Biennial Foundation. It is a non-profit based at the University of Dar es Salaam and relies on grants, donations and sponsorships.
The event is held every two years and moves around the region. In 2011 and 2012, the fifth edition toured Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura, as the same source shows. So, the “satellite city” idea fits the biennale’s long-running travelling format.
How the Last Documented Edition Worked
The eighth edition, called “Moving Arts Across East African Borders”, opened in Dar es Salaam in November 2017. The New Times in Rwanda covered the Kigali leg, which ran from February 12 to 18, 2018. The East African also covered that edition.
That shows what to expect from a biennale of this type. Shows move from city to city, local artists take part in each leg, and sales carry a commission for the association, according to The New Times. Still, we found no comparable coverage of the 11th edition opening, so check recent updates before you go.
What About the Satellite Cities?
The biennale’s travelling format means Dar es Salaam, Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura are meant to host their own shows and collaborations. That is good news if you live closer to one of those cities, because you may not need to travel to Nairobi at all.
However, no dates or venues for these satellite shows were published in the reports we found. So, follow the organisers’ official channels and local art spaces in each city for the exact schedule.
Should You Plan a Trip Around It?
If you love contemporary art, Nairobi is a good place to be anyway, because its galleries and art spaces are active all year. However, do not book flights or hotels only for this biennale until you can confirm a specific venue and opening date directly with the organisers.
Next, ask three simple questions before you go. Which exact venue hosts the show you want to see? Is there an entry fee? And does the show run on the date you plan to visit? Because the event spans several cities, the programme may differ from place to place.

Why This Story Matters for East African Art
Regional biennales give artists from smaller art scenes a platform they might not get otherwise. Over the years, this one has linked Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, so its success or failure matters to many working artists.
That is also why clear information matters. When a venue name appears on promotional material without agreement, artists, visitors and sponsors can all be misled. So, ask for confirmation in writing if you plan to submit work, sponsor a show or travel far to attend.
The East Africa Art Biennale has a long history and an inviting theme. Still, the 2026 edition comes with open questions about venues and partners. So, follow official updates, confirm details before you travel and enjoy the art scene wherever you are.
