Every year, the same thing happens. Your friends in the diaspora land, the timeline fills with concert posters, and suddenly a hotel room, a ride home and a plate of jollof all cost more than they did in October. If you live in Nigeria, you feel it first.
The good news? You have advantages that visitors do not. You know the roads, you know the shortcuts, and you can plan early. So, here is a practical guide to Detty December for locals, built around what is confirmed so far.
Why December Feels Different When You Live Here
For visitors, Detty December is a holiday. For locals, it is a holiday and a price test. In our report on diaspora Nigerians choosing Ghana and Rwanda, one tourism executive warned that some operators tripled rates for the season, and others charged up to six times normal prices.
Short-lets are the clearest example. Last year, users on X shared screenshots of up to ₦700,000 per night for an ordinary one-bedroom in Lekki Phase 1.
Meanwhile, the government wants a bigger season. Our Ember to Remember explainer covers the tourism strategy and why the ember months matter. However, the same piece notes that high December hotel prices remain the real test.
The Calendar: What Is Actually Confirmed
Dates change quickly, so treat this as a working list. If you want the full event rundown, our first-timers walkthrough has more detail.
Lagos Biennial (Oct 17 to Dec 18): The fifth edition is already running, which makes it a calm way to start the season.
Davido, “Oriadé: The Residency” (Dec 17 to 19): Three nights at the National Theatre, Iganmu. As of October 16, fewer than 350 tickets remained across all nights, despite some online calls for a boycott. He will perform the ORIADE album in full in Lagos for the first time.
Detty December Fest (Dec 18 to 30): Wizkid opens on December 18. Opening-night tickets start at ₦50,000. Read our full Detty December Fest breakdown before you buy.
Flytime Fest (Dec 22 to 24): At the Eko Convention Centre. The Rio Times corrected an earlier 22 to 25 date, so confirm on the official channel. The festival has run most Decembers at the Eko Convention Centre, as Wikipedia’s Flytime Fest page shows.
Calabar Carnival (Dec 26 to 30): Main parades run in the last week of the month.
Also, remember that Art X Lagos runs November 5 to 8 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island. Read our Art X Lagos guide if you want a pre-December warm-up.
Beat the Prices Before They Climb
Timing is your biggest weapon. Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve are the most expensive nights, and that event tickets should be booked by November at the latest. So, if you can, plan your big outing for the week before Christmas.
Pick three must-dos. Choose your three events first, then budget around them.
Go on weekdays or early in the season. The season runs from about December 14, and the first week is usually calmer.
Buy only from official links. Our Wizkid report warns about fake ticket pages, so check the organiser’s own page.
Skip unnecessary overnight stays. If you live in Lagos, staying with a friend nearby can cost nothing compared with a hotel.
Move Smart: Traffic, Rides and Cash
Lagos roads get heavy during the festive period. Third Mainland Bridge, Ikorodu Road and the Lekki-Epe Expressway routes gets overwhelming, and it's best you travel before 6:30 am or after 10 pm. It also better to arrive early at events.
Rides are less certain this year. Lagos e-hailing drivers began an indefinite strike against Bolt and inDrive on October 12. Uber also exited Nigeria on September 2. Cash matters too. So, withdraw early, and carry some cash for boat rides and small vendors.
Cheap and Free Ways to Enjoy the Season
Not every good night costs ₦50,000. Here are lower-cost ideas you can do in or near Lagos.
Beach day: Tarkwa Bay boat rides cost roughly ₦1,500 to ₦3,000 per person plus about ₦500 entry. Go in daylight and carry cash.
Lekki Conservation Centre: Walk the 401-metre canopy walkway. Fees were not listed, so call ahead.
Unticketed hangouts: Victoria Island and Lekki host beach clubs, rooftop sets and day parties without tickets.
Not in Lagos? You Still Have Options
Detty December is not only a Lagos story. Our December season page covers Lagos, Abuja, Accra and Port Harcourt, and the Calabar Carnival is a short flight from Lagos. If you want a quieter plan, Ibeno Beach in Akwa Ibom holds a large party on December 26.
In Abuja, a 16-day Groovy December ran in 2025, but there is no confirmed 2026 edition yet. So, if you live in the capital, watch official announcements before you plan a trip around it. Moreover, going home for Christmas is its own kind of Detty December, so budget for that travel early too.
Do Not Forget Owambe Season
For many Nigerians, December also means weddings and family parties. That brings its own costs, such as aso ebi, gifts and transport. Our owambe economy piece explains how those expectations work. So, decide early which invitations you will say yes to. That way, your party budget does not swallow your concert budget.
You do not need to spend like a tourist to enjoy the season. Plan early, stay flexible, and protect your money. For more, visit our adventure desk and music desk, and watch the tickets page as events go on sale.
