Spotify's audiobooks went live in Nigeria on 14th October, with more than 350,000 titles and an Audiobooks+ add-on at ₦2,300 a month for 15 hours of listening, as BusinessDay's launch coverage lays out. It is open to both Spotify Free and Premium users, and it arrives as part of a wider rollout that takes audiobooks to more than 180 markets.
What Spotify Is Offering
Audiobooks+ costs ₦2,300 a month and includes 15 hours of listening. Only time spent actually listening counts, and unused hours reset at the end of each billing cycle. Users who run out can buy 10 more hours for ₦2,700, or buy individual titles to keep.
The app adds an audiobook section with search, browsing and recommendations based on what a listener already enjoys across music, podcasts and books. It also includes:
Page Match, which lets a listener scan a printed book's ISBN barcode and switch between the print and audio versions by page number.
Offline downloads.
A sleep timer.
Listening progress that syncs across supported devices.
Owen Smith, Spotify's vice-president of audiobooks, said: "Books change how we see the world, and the people in it."
What an Hour of Listening Costs
The monthly add-on and the top-up price listening differently. Divided out, the ₦2,300 add-on is about ₦153 for each hour, while the ₦2,700 top-up is ₦270 an hour. The figures below are a PINCHED calculation from the prices BusinessDay reported.

Cost per hour of listening, calculated from the launch prices
The gap matters for anyone who listens a lot. A heavy listener who burns through the 15 hours and buys a top-up pays almost twice as much for each extra hour.
A New Route for Nigerian Creators
Spotify has long been a place where Nigerian artistes and podcasters build audiences, and audiobooks now sit in the same app as music and podcasts, with recommendations drawn from all three. Nigerian publishers and self-published writers can upload audiobooks through Spotify for Authors and reach listeners in more than 180 markets, with listener information available to them. Spotify says its partnerships are non-exclusive, so an author can still distribute through other channels. BusinessDay notes that revenue shares and local commissioning plans were not specified.
That makes the launch relevant to creators as well as listeners. Authors, podcasters, storytellers and artistes who already build an audience on their own channels now have one more format on a platform they already use. PINCHED covers the other ways creators earn, from products to direct fan support through Give a Pinch.
Will Nigerians Pay?
BusinessDay raises the obvious questions. Will people pay for a separate audiobook subscription on top of data and the music, video and other digital services they already buy? Does a 15-hour cap suit heavy listeners? And will local creators earn meaningful income when the cost of professional audio production is high and the revenue terms are unknown? Spotify's global growth figures also say little about how quickly Nigerian listeners will take to the format.
PINCHED already puts a listening option inside its own articles, with a choice of narrators and speeds, covered in how to listen to a PINCHED story.
