Sixty startups from across West Africa are pitching at the new ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja this week, as the second edition of the ECOWAS Startup Awards moves into its final stage. How the Competition Works

The 60 startups were whittled down from 6,679 registrations across 12 ECOWAS member states, of which 1,499 applications qualified, Arise News reports. The first-place startup takes $30,000, second place $20,000 and third place $15,000, according to ECOWAS, and the organisers are also targeting $5 million in deals across the competition's six sectors: FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and food systems, EdTech and skills development, CleanTech and green innovation, and tourism, hospitality and travel tech.

Entry was not open to ideas on paper. The Guardian reports that applicants had to be registered, locally based startups from ECOWAS member states, operating for at least two years, with a working product and evidence of traction. A virtual masterclass ran from 21st to 25th September before the Abuja finals, and Peter Oluonye, Acting Director of Private Sector Development at the ECOWAS Commission, said the programme narrows the 60 down to 20 finalists before the winners are picked, Arise News reports. All 60 also enter a six-month acceleration programme.

What Nigeria's Government Said

At the opening, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment Senator John Enoh, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr Chris Isokpunwu, pointed to August's funding figures. "Nigerian start-ups reportedly raised $364.1 million USD," he said, calling it "an encouraging indication of the growing interest and capacity of Nigerian entrepreneurs to develop enterprises with regional and global potential," Arise News reports.

The government's framing went further than celebrating the number. ThisDay reports that officials used the event to argue Nigerian startups now need to show they can build productive capacity, create jobs, reach markets and compete sustainably, tying the sector to the government's goal of raising manufacturing's share of GDP from 8.9 percent to 15 percent by 2030.

Why a Regional Competition Matters

Most startup funding headlines treat African countries one at a time. The ECOWAS awards put founders from 12 West African countries in the same room, in front of the same investors and jury, which is closer to how startups in the region actually have to grow: across borders, currencies and regulators at once. Oluonye said the programme is built to "connect start-ups to venture capitalists, impact investors, development partners, and financial institutions," per ThisDay.

For Nigerian founders, it is one more signal that building a product is only half the job. This week PINCHED profiled the couple behind SmallChopsng and AutoGirl, who are building an EV charging network with expansion into Ghana and Senegal already on their list, which is exactly the kind of cross-border ambition a regional competition like this rewards.

What to Watch Next

The winners are due to be named when the programme closes on 30th September. Who wins, which countries they come from and which sectors they represent will say a lot about where West African investors and policymakers think the next wave of growth is coming from.
