Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has asked President John Mahama to back Ghana's film industry with funding that filmmakers would pay back, Pulse Ghana reports. He made the appeal during a visit to Accra for his Legacy Project.

What He Asked For

Edochie said he believes a direct appeal to the president would work. "I believe that if you make a direct appeal to him, support us, challenge us with this amount of money, let's go and shoot films, give us so and so time, we shall return the money," he said, according to Pulse Ghana. GhanaWeb reports that he also said: "If I say, your excellency, sir, don't let our industry die in Ghana, he will respond." He described Mahama as a very progressive person and pointed to the president's welcome for the African diaspora as a sign of his openness.

Why Edochie Is in Accra

Edochie arrived in Ghana on 29th September to launch the Pete Edochie Legacy Project during Accra Legacy Week, Modern Ghana reports. The appeal came from a video shared by TINA NEWS and picked up by Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb on 2nd October.

What He Said on Arrival

Before the appeal, Edochie said the state of Ghana's industry troubled him. "I actually don't feel happy that the industry in Ghana is no longer flourishing," he said, GhanaWeb reported. He also said: "If you tell a story about it, the government can invest."

A Visit to a Veteran Ghanaian Actor

During the trip he visited Emmanuel Armah, the veteran Ghanaian actor, and gave money towards his care, GhanaWeb reports.

Part of a Wider Exchange

Ghana and Nigeria's film industries have been working together more openly this week. PINCHED reported on Nollywood stars arriving in Accra to shoot Lil Win's A Journey to Africa, and Edochie's appeal is a call for Ghana to keep building up its own industry as that exchange grows.

What to Watch Next

The presidency has not responded in the reports PINCHED has seen. The questions are whether the government takes up the idea of a repayable fund, and what comes of the Legacy Project that brought Edochie to Accra.
