Imagine football’s biggest night landing in London for the very first time. That is exactly what is happening at the Ballon d’Or 2026, and the African nominees are all over the shortlist.
Ten players from the continent made the cut, so you have plenty of reasons to tune in. However, only a few have a real shot at the top prize, so let’s break everything down.
Ballon d’Or 2026 at a Glance
Date: Monday, October 26, 2026
Venue: London Palladium Theatre, the first time London hosts the ceremony
Time: 8:00 PM London time, which should be 9:00 PM in Nigeria (confirm closer to the date)
Nominees announced: September 8, by France Football and UEFA
Voting: 100 journalists decide the winners
Season covered: August 3, 2025 to July 19, 2026.
This is also the 70th edition. France Football created the award in 1956, and London was chosen partly to honour Sir Stanley Matthews, the first-ever winner.
What Is the Ballon d’Or, and How Is It Decided?
The Ballon d’Or is football’s most famous individual award. It recognises the best players of the season, based on club and international performances, and a panel of journalists votes for the winners.
Although it covers several categories, most fans only care about one question: who is the best player in the world? That is why the men’s and women’s awards get the loudest buzz every year.
Who Are the 10 African Nominees?
Morocco leads with three nominees, while Senegal has two. Zambia, Malawi, Ivory Coast, Algeria and Cape Verde have one each.
Men’s Ballon d’Or: Only Two Africans
Achraf Hakimi (Morocco, PSG): one of the world’s leading full-backs
Sadio Mané (Senegal, Al-Nassr): still a continental icon, and a former Ballon d’Or runner-up
Women’s Ballon d’Or
Barbra Banda (Zambia, Orlando Pride): the Zambia captain scored four against Egypt at WAFCON 2026
Temwa Chawinga (Malawi, Kansas City Current): she hit a hat-trick as Malawi stunned defending champions Nigeria at the same tournament
Men’s Young Talent of the Year
Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco): an 18-year-old midfielder linked with Manchester City
Yan Diomandé (Ivory Coast): 20 goals and assists in his debut season at RB Leipzig
Ibrahim Maza (Algeria): the Bayer Leverkusen man completes the trio
Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year (Yashin Trophy)
Yassine Bounou (Morocco, Al Hilal)
Édouard Mendy (Senegal, Al-Ahli)
Vozinha (Cape Verde): the veteran who starred at the 2026 World Cup
Big Names Missing From the List
The shortlist also surprised many fans. Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphinha, Pedri, Julián Álvarez and Dani Olmo did not make the men’s 30. However, Sadio Mané did, which delighted many African supporters.
So, if you enjoy a good debate, this one is perfect for your group chat. Who got snubbed, and who deserves a place?
Can an African Player Actually Win?
Let’s be honest: the men’s top prize is a tough ask. Hakimi and Mané share a 30-man list with names like Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, as the full nominee table shows. Meanwhile, George Weah remains the only African to win the men’s award, back in 1995.
However, the other categories give the continent real hope. Banda, Chawinga and the three goalkeepers all have strong cases. Although nobody can call it yet, the winners stay secret until October 26.
What About Nigeria?
You may have noticed that no Nigerian player appears on the African list. The Super Eagles missed the 2026 World Cup, and they just suffered a shock defeat in the AFCON qualifiers, which you can read about in our Guinea-Bissau match breakdown.
