OGWA Studios, the independent film company founded by actor and filmmaker Prosper Light, marked its first anniversary on 28th September, one year after launching in September 2025 without outside money behind it. "I didn't start OGWA with a trust fund, major investor, or co-founder," Light told Tribune Online. "I started with a belief that I could build something from the ground up."

What OGWA Studios Made in Year One

In its first 12 months, OGWA Studios produced four short films and one documentary, Tribune reports. Light says he covered production costs himself whenever projects ran past their initial budgets. Alongside the films, the studio hosted five industry events and masterclasses with a combined 578 attendees, built a registered community of 207 members, and says it now reaches more than 100,000 people a month online, with 47 brand and creative partnerships signed over the year.

The studio's guiding line is Igbo: "OGWA bụ ụlọ," which translates as "OGWA is home." It is a clue to how Light frames the company, as a community space for filmmakers as much as a production house.

The Move Into Publishing

The anniversary also brings a new direction. The Nollywood Reporter reports that OGWA Studios is launching a publishing arm, starting with a title called Blue Biro. Fuller details on the project have not yet been widely published.

Light describes the next stage as "The Next Chapter," focused on reaching bigger markets, scaling the studio's infrastructure and building international partnerships while keeping its community focus, according to Tribune.

Why a Self-Funded Studio Matters

Most conversations about Nigerian film infrastructure focus on the biggest players. This week alone, PINCHED covered Mo Abudu's EbonyLife Place London, a Nigerian entertainment brand planting a cinema in one of the world's largest media markets. OGWA Studios sits at the other end of the same ecosystem: a single founder funding short films, masterclasses and community events himself, in the hope of growing into something bigger. That end of the industry is where many of the next generation of Nollywood filmmakers get their first credits, and it rarely gets the same attention.

What to Watch Next

The first test of OGWA's next phase will be what Blue Biro turns out to be and how it is released, and whether the studio's short films start reaching audiences beyond its own community, whether through festivals, streaming or partnerships.
