Nile Entertainment has set five Nigerian films for release across October 2026, one of its busiest months in its two-year run as a distributor. Led by Moses Babatope, the slate spans faith-based cinema, an investigative documentary, cross-cultural romance, speculative fiction and a cross-generational drama, opening on Nigeria's 66th Independence Day and continuing through the month, What Kept Me Up reports.
The Month Opens With a Faith Franchise and a Presidential Documentary
October begins on the 1st with Agbara Nla: The Return, the latest instalment in the faith-based franchise from Mount Zion Faith Ministries, co-produced by Circuits and Sozo Films Production and directed by Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and JayMikee. The film was originally announced for release by Blue Pictures and will now be distributed by Nile instead, following renewed anticipation after its trailer went out in early September.
A day later, on 2nd October, Nile releases MKO, an investigative documentary directed by Ose Oyamendan and executive produced by three-time Academy Award winner Mark Jonathan Harris. The film had its world premiere at Sheffield DocFest and chronicles the life and political legacy of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola. What Kept Me Up notes it becomes the second Nigerian documentary to secure a theatrical release in 2026, following Mothers of Chibok, in a year that has seen growing festival visibility for Nigerian nonfiction film.

A Kenyan-Nigerian Romance and an Alternate Nigeria
On 9th October, East West Love arrives in cinemas after premiering as the opening film of the 2026 NollywoodWeek festival. Directed by Seko Shamte, the Kenyan-Nigerian co-production stars Sunshine Rosman and Brian Abajah in a story that turns a girls' getaway to Mombasa, meant as an escape from heartbreak, into a journey toward healing. Dolapo "LowlaDee" Adeleke produces.
Later, on 23rd October, Nile turns to speculative fiction with A Land Apart. Written and directed by Bem Pever for Sutoritera and Take 7 Media, the film imagines an alternate Nigeria that built its prosperity on agriculture rather than crude oil, a rare example of alternate-history storytelling within contemporary Nollywood. Its cast includes Richard Mofe-Damijo, Sam Dede, Onyeka Onwenu, Daniel Etim Effiong and Princess Muffedah, and a new trailer released in early September gave audiences a fuller look ahead of its theatrical debut.
The Month Closes With an AFRIFF Double Winner
October ends on the 30th with Ifeoma Chukwuogo's Phoenix Fury, which opens in both Nigerian and Ghanaian cinemas. The film won both Best Film and Best Director at AFRIFF 2024. Its cross-generational drama unfolds across decades between Nigeria and Ghana, exploring love, identity, loss, vengeance and redemption through interconnected chapters, with a cast that includes Ama K. Abebrese, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Joseph Momodu, Onyinye Odokoro and Uzoamaka Power.

Why This Slate Matters for Nollywood Distribution
What Kept Me Up frames Nile's October push as a snapshot of how distributors are balancing established audience favourites against riskier, filmmaker-driven projects, and of the role distributors play in deciding what actually reaches the big screen. Three of the five October titles are timed closely to Nigeria's Independence Day, giving Nile's biggest month of promotional pushes a national moment to open against.
The slate also arrives while Nile's The Night of June 7th remains stuck awaiting regulatory clearance following its postponement, which the outlet notes as context for why October represents the company's next major theatrical push rather than business as usual. Nile's September titles included Tola Odunsin's 19 and Joseph Okechukwu's Properties of the Gods, ahead of this new slate.
Nile's willingness to pick up a film after another distributor's announcement, as with Agbara Nla: The Return moving from Blue Pictures, is not unique to October. PINCHED reported on a similar late shift in distribution plans with Nollywood Next's launch at TIFF, where financing partners were introduced closer to release than filmmakers had originally planned.
