For one day, the usual price of a Nigerian cinema ticket will not decide whether people go. On 26th September, the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria's Nigeria Cinema Day drops the price of any film, at any participating cinema, to ₦3,000, ShockNG reports. The lineup covers four recent Nollywood titles and five international releases, and the day falls on the same Saturday as the Black Market Guinness World Record screening attempt at Tafawa Balewa Square.
What ₦3,000 Actually Buys
Regular cinema tickets in major Nigerian cities often run well above ₦5,000 and climb higher depending on the hall and amenities, ShockNG notes. The flat ₦3,000 Cinema Day rate applies from the first morning show through the final evening screening, at every participating cinema, for whichever film a viewer picks, whether that is a new Nollywood release, a returning Hollywood franchise entry, or a Bollywood crossover title.

Four Editions, Three Price Rises
CEAN launched Nigeria Cinema Day on 2nd September 2023 at ₦1,000 a ticket, selling 21,556 tickets, according to ShockNG's account of the event's history. The second edition, on 21st September 2024, held the ₦1,000 price but sold fewer tickets, 16,140, a 25 percent drop from the debut, though still a 196 percent jump over the previous weekend's regular sales. The third edition, on 20th September 2025, doubled the price to ₦2,000, and attendance still rose roughly 5 percent over 2024, with the Shaffy Bello-led thriller Gingerrr recording the day's highest ticket sales, ahead of the record Deadpool & Wolverine had set in 2024. This year's ₦3,000 price is triple the 2023 launch rate, tracking the rise in regular ticket prices over the same stretch.
The Four Nollywood Titles Getting a Second Shot
King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, directed by Adebayo Tijani and led by Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola and Gabriel Afolayan, opened nationwide on 28th August. The historical drama follows warrior Kosoko, grandson of King Ologun Kutere, as he is pushed aside from the Lagos throne after his father's death and builds wealth and alliances before his eventual rise.
Ikenga: The Last Festival, an Igbo epic thriller directed by Darlington Obodo Kelechi, reached cinemas on 21st August. It pairs Nollywood veterans Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwor and Kanayo O. Kanayo with current stars including Zubby Michael, Destiny Etiko and Regina Daniels, in a story built around the Ikenga, the sacred symbol of personal strength and achievement.
Alahun: The Weaver, also released on 21st August, marks Dare Olaitan's return to directing since Ile Owo in 2022. Produced by Kayode Kasum and distributed by Genesis, the Yoruba fantasy follows a young man ridiculed for loving basket weaving and hair plaiting, crafts his community insists are not for men, who is pulled into a mystical journey that could decide his kingdom's fate. Odunlade Adekola leads a cast that includes Ibrahim Chatta and Lateef Adedimeji.
Properties of the Gods, distributed by Nile Entertainment, opened on 4th September, a date the producers dedicated to the memory of Onyeka Onwenu, who appears in one of her final screen performances. Directed by Okechukwu Oku and Uzodinma Okpechi, the film follows two young Igbo Americans whose wedding is halted when a family investigation reveals she is Osu and he is Diala, tracing the origins of the Osu caste system. Pete Edochie, who inspired the project, stars alongside Enyinna Nwigwe and Hilda Dokubo.

The International Titles Sharing the Screens
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, his adaptation of Homer starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Zendaya, is the title ShockNG singles out as most worth a discounted ticket, given its 173-minute runtime and large-format design. It opened 17th July. Also showing are the Jason Statham action thriller Mutiny, the horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further, the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Mark Wahlberg-led crime drama By Any Means, and Mirzapur, the Prime Video crime series' feature-length interquel, all of which opened between 21st August and 4th September.

Why the Timing With Black Market Matters
The same Saturday, Rixel Studios is attempting a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a single film screening with Black Market at Tafawa Balewa Square, PINCHED reported earlier this week. ShockNG notes that while the two events are unrelated, their shared date adds a layer of national focus on theatrical film that CEAN's own promotional day does not typically carry on its own.
What CEAN Is Actually Testing
ShockNG frames Cinema Day less as charity than as the exhibition industry running a controlled experiment on its own pricing, with each year's turnout functioning as a data point on how price affects behaviour. Past editions have shown mixed results on whether local or international titles draw the biggest crowds, but attendance has consistently risen with the discount in place, regardless of which titles led ticket sales that year.
