The event marked a shift for Nigerian boxing, opening selection to foreign-based boxers, mainly from the UK, on the same footing as home-based fighters, after years of criticism over closed-door team selections. A total of 147 boxers competed across ten weight categories, with the women's 70kg final between UK-based Patricia Mbata and Lagos-based Blessing Orakwe standing out as the week's defining fight. The boxers selected went on to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July, where results were mixed, raising the question of whether a fairer selection process alone is enough to turn Nigerian boxing's talent into results.
