The documentary MKO will have its national premiere on Thursday, 1st October, Nigeria's 66th Independence Day, at the newly renovated Wole Soyinka National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, with President Bola Tinubu set to attend, Channels Television reports. The feature-length film, directed by Ose Oyamendan, opens in cinemas across Nigeria the next day, Friday, 2nd October.
What the Film Covers
MKO follows the life and political legacy of Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, the annulled 12th June 1993 presidential election, his detention and his death in 1998, Vanguard reports. Oyamendan calls it "an investigative documentary about a man, an election, and the global conspiracy that robbed Africa's largest democracy of her elected leader," and "a warning to the world."
The film is built on testimony from people who were there. Channels Television says it features archival footage alongside first-hand accounts from former heads of state General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, and names President Tinubu himself among those who took part in the pro-democracy movement. Vanguard adds former US diplomats Thomas Pickering and Walter Carrington, Abiola's former prison guard Theodore Zadok, Amnesty International's Adotei Akwei, members of the Abiola family and journalists.

How It Got Here
MKO had its international premiere at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival in June, Channels reports. Its producer is the American filmmaker Mark Jonathan Harris, according to Vanguard, and Nile Entertainment is distributing it in Nigeria. Nile's Managing Director, Moses Babatope, said: "It is a great movie about Nigerian history and life, and we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to see it," The Sun reports. Billboards announcing the 2nd October release have been going up across the country, including in Lagos.
Why the Release Matters
A documentary on one of the defining episodes of Nigeria's democracy is getting the treatment of a major cinema release: a national premiere on Independence Day and a nationwide rollout the next morning. It also lands during a busy cinema month. Nile Entertainment has five Nigerian films scheduled for October, What Kept Me Up lists, including East West Love, a Kenyan-Nigerian collaboration opening on 9th October. PINCHED has also covered Mo Abudu's EbonyLife Place London, which is due to open on 8th October as a cinema for African and Black films, so the month also carries a wider story about where African stories are being screened.
What to Watch Next
The first measure is how MKO performs at the box office in its opening weekend, given that documentaries rarely get a release of this size in Nigerian cinemas. The second is the conversation around the film itself, since it puts several of the people involved in 1993 on screen at the same time.
This article is a news report, and PINCHED has not yet seen or rated the film.
