From a Campus Cover to the Suniverse

Before he was Legendary Suni, he was Sunny Eke Awa, a singer with no stage name and no industry connections, recording a cover of John Legend's "All of Me." The song travelled further than he expected. It reached radio, and he remembers hearing dancers backstage at one event singing it and correcting each other on the words, he told FAB L'Style. Fifteen years into his career, he is firmly an Afro soul artist, and he is blunt about why: "A person without an identity is like a candle in the wind."

His name has changed along the way. He first went by Suni Vibes, which never felt like him, so he rebuilt the identity around a piece of wordplay. Take the first letter off Suniverse and you are left with Universe. The Suniverse EP, released in October 2024, was how he introduced the new name, and "Hypnotized," his latest single, gives the new tour its name.

The Night He Opened for Davido

His biggest stage so far came in 2024, when he opened for Davido at Flyfest. He had applied for the festival for four years before he was picked. "Getting that email saying, 'Hi, Suni, you've been selected to open for Davido,' felt so surreal," he said. He has done all of this as an independent artist, which he says means a longer road to promotion than major-label acts get, and he learned about contracts the hard way early on. PINCHED has looked at what a stream is actually worth to an African artist, and for independent acts like him a full room on a Sunday evening counts for a lot.

Who Is on the Bill

Six acts join him in Abuja. Amuta Stone is the closest thing to a home voice. Born in Zaria and raised in Port Harcourt and Abuja, she mixes jazz, blues and soul and has shared stages with Asa, D'banj and Made Kuti, according to her official biography. Tchella is a singer, songwriter and producer who spent his early years mastering the production side before stepping out as an artist, and he signed with Anara Publishing in 2025. Atela, Ferrycee and Qiqii complete the singers, and Lucase 2 will give the first live performance of "Zuchiya" on the night.

Why Abuja Matters

For an artist who says he waited years for a festival to say yes, a tour that sells itself on good music, fine people and free entry is a different kind of statement. He is not waiting for a slot anymore. He is building the room himself, city by city, and Abuja is where the Suniverse lands next.

What to Watch Next

The first thing to see is how full Blake Resort gets on a free-entry night. The second is the debut of "Zuchiya" with Lucase 2. PINCHED will have more from the tour after the Abuja show.
